SECTIONLINE (Command)

The SECTIONLINE command creates a section cutting plane indicator — a labeled line with arrows showing the viewing direction of a cross-section. Section lines are essential for engineering drawings to reference section views.

Prompts

Prompt Description Keywords
Specify start point Click the starting point of the section line
Specify next point Click subsequent points (for bends in the cutting plane) Angle, Distance, FlipArrow, Text, Undo

Keywords

Keyword Description
Angle Specify the next segment by angle then length
Distance Specify the next segment by length then angle
FlipArrow Reverse the arrow direction (viewing side)
Text Change the section label text (default starts at A, auto-increments)
Undo Remove the last point

How to Use

Simple Section Line

  1. Type sectionline and press Enter
  2. Click the start point of the cutting plane
  3. Click the end point — a section line is created with arrows and label
  4. Press Enter to finish

Offset (Stepped) Section Line

  1. Type sectionline and press Enter
  2. Click the start point
  3. Click intermediate points to create bends in the cutting plane
  4. Click the end point and press Enter

Using Angle/Distance

Command: sectionline
Specify start point: (click)
Specify next point [Angle / Distance / FlipArrow / Text / Undo]: Distance
Specify the length: 50
Specify the angle: 90
→ Adds a 50mm segment at 90 degrees

Section Line Appearance

The section line entity includes:

Element Description
Cutting line Chain (dash-dot) linetype along the cutting plane path
End marks Thick lines perpendicular to the cutting plane at start and end
Arrows Solid triangular arrows indicating the viewing direction
Labels Text labels (e.g., A, B, C) at each end of the section line

Auto-Increment Labels

Section line labels automatically increment:

  • First section line: A-A
  • Second: B-B
  • Third: C-C
  • Use the Text keyword to override or reset the label

Best Practices

Tip Reason
Place section lines on a dedicated layer Easy to toggle visibility
Use FlipArrow to control viewing direction Arrow points toward the retained material
Use offset section lines for complex parts Shows features at different depths in one view
Label consistently (A, B, C...) Matches corresponding section views
